The Mercedes-Benz G-class is a premium mid-size SUV and, as they say, a "classic of the genre": a real "rogue" with a frame structure, continuous rear axle and all-wheel drive transmission, which has remarkable off-road potential ... Its main target audience is wealthy men who want to demonstrate their high status to others and who practice off-road trips ...

The next (we can say the third in a row) generation of the car with the in-plant marking "W464" debuted in mid-January 2018 - at the International North American Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS).

After the "reincarnation" the car retained its recognizable, albeit slightly refined appearance, but otherwise changed dramatically: it enlarged in size, got a completely new interior, "tried on" a deeply modernized technical "stuffing" (in particular, an independent front suspension) and replenished its arsenal with new, hitherto unavailable equipment.

Outside, the "third" Mercedes-Benz G-class is unmistakably perceived as "Gelendwagen" - the SUV has a 100% recognizable "square" design, but at the same time it looks attractive and brutal.

The front of the five-door flaunts round headlights with LED filling, a "family" radiator grille with a large "three-beam star" and a streamlined bumper, and from the rear it catches the eye with a sideways opening luggage door, on which a spare wheel is suspended, and scanty LED lights.

In profile, the car demonstrates chopped outlines with completely flat sidewalls, a slightly sloping hood and rounded-square wheel arches, the "legendary" of which is added by external door hinges, a diagonal joint on the front fender and "rough" door handles - there is something memorable in this. leaving its mark.

The length of the Mercedes-Benz G-class W464 is 4715 mm, the width is 1881 mm, and the height is 1951 mm. Between the wheelsets of the five-door, a base with a size of 2850 mm fits, and under the bottom it has a 241 mm ground clearance.

In the curb state, the "German" weighs from 2425 to 2442 kg, depending on the version, and its gross weight is 3030 kg.

Interior

Inside, the third generation Gelenevagen meets its abodes with a corporate-wide design of the German brand, the main emphasis of which is placed on two 12.3-inch widescreen displays (placed under the common glass): the left one plays the role of a dashboard, and the right one is responsible for infotainment functions. The graceful center console of the SUV is crowned with "turbines" of ventilation deflectors, three massive keys that activate differential locks, a stylish analog clock and a "microclimate" unit, and a three-spoke multi-steering wheel (personally from the S-class) is located in the driver's workplace.

The interior of the car is finished exclusively with premium materials, and it is assembled with high quality.

Salon Mercedes-Benz G-class of the third generation has a five-seat layout. At the front, there are comfortable seats with an ergonomic profile, developed sidewalls and an exhaustive range of electric adjustments, and as an option - with massage and ventilation.

At the rear, there is a welcoming sofa with a central armrest, a tilt-adjustable backrest and a separate air conditioning unit.

The luggage compartment of an SUV with the internal factory marking "W464" is correct in shape, with absolutely even walls, but completely unsophisticated, and even devoid of not only underground, but also the ability to get a flat floor when folding the rear seats (and a roller blind here can be only for a surcharge).

In the normal position, the volume of the “hold” is 667 liters, and with the second row folded in the ratio “60:40” it increases to 1941 liters. The spare wheel at the five-door is suspended on the fifth door.

Specifications

For the "third" Mercedes-Benz G-class, three power units are announced to choose from, meeting the environmental standards "Euro-6":

  • Under the hood of the basic diesel version G350d hides a turbocharged 2.9-liter "six" in-line with common rail injection and a 24-valve timing chain that generates 249 horsepower at 4600 rpm and 610 Nm of torque at 4750 rpm.
  • More "capable" diesel modification G400d is equipped with the same in-line six-cylinder engine with a working volume of 2.9 liters, but already producing 330 hp. at 3400-4600 rpm and 700 Nm of peak thrust at 1200-3200 rpm.
  • Petrol version G500 Powered by a 4.0-liter V-8, twin-turbocharged, direct-powered, 32-valve timing and variable valve timing, which produces 422 hp. at 5250-5500 rpm and 610 Nm of rotational potential at 2250-4750 rpm.

As standard, the SUV is equipped with a 9-speed "automatic" 9G-Tronic and an all-wheel drive transmission with a central mechanical differential that distributes traction in normal conditions asymmetrically - in the ratio "40:60" in favor of the rear axle.

From a place to the first "hundred" the car accelerates after 5.9-7.4 seconds, and its maximum speed "rests" at 199-210 km / h. Diesel modifications cost 9.6-9.8 liters of fuel for every 100 km of run in combined conditions, while the gasoline version “destroys” 12.1 liters on average.

In addition, the five-door boasts forced locks of all three differentials (the center is closed by an electronically controlled clutch) and a transfer case with a reduction gear.

And outside the asphalt pavement, the SUV feels like in its element: the angles of entry, exit and overturning are 31, 30 and 35 degrees, the depth of the forced ford reaches 700 mm, and the steepness of the overcome slope is 100% (in low gear).

Design features

At the heart of the Mercedes-Benz G-class W464 is a backbone-type steel frame.

The body of the car is made of high-strength steel grades, while the fenders, hood and doors are made of aluminum.

At the front, the SUV is equipped with an independent suspension on double wishbones, and at the rear - a continuous axle with four trailing arms and a Panhard rod ("in a circle" - with coil springs, shock absorbers with variable resistance and lateral stabilizers).

In addition, this "German" is equipped with a rack-and-pinion steering system, which is complemented by an adaptive electric power steering. All wheels of the five-door are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, docked with ABS, EBD and other modern "gadgets".

Nominally, the SUV is equipped with five "driving" algorithms - Comfort, Eco, Sport, Individual and G-Mode. With their help, the settings of the shock absorbers, steering, power unit and all-wheel drive transmission are changed, and the last mode - adjusts all the systems of the car to conquer the off-road.
