Toyota Fortuner is a five-door mid-size SUV, created according to "classic patterns": frame body structure, continuous rear axle and all-wheel drive.

Its target audience is wealthy family men with several children and in need of a universal "vehicle" who prefer outdoor activities (fishing, hunting, etc.) or just like off-road excursions ...

In mid-July 2015, the Australian division of Toyota held an official presentation of the "rogue" of the next (second) generation - the car of the "2016 model year" changed "beyond recognition" both externally and internally, as well as seriously updated in technical terms (received a lot of modern equipment) ... sales of this SUV in the main (for him) markets started already in October of the same year, and it reached the Russian market a couple of years later - in October 2017.

In June 2020, the Japanese presented an updated SUV, which was slightly "refreshed" in appearance due to different bumpers, a new design of the radiator grille and corrected optics, slightly tweaked the interior by revising the instrument design and enlarging the media center screen, and also modernized the diesel engine, making it more efficient and more economical.

"The second Fortuner", dressed in the new corporate style of the Japanese brand, became much more attractive than its predecessor (although you definitely cannot call him handsome) - narrow, viciously "squinted" head optics, "fangs" on the front bumper and sweeping contours of the rear lights, located on the monumental stern - it seems that the designers have somewhat lost their sense of proportion.

And if we add to this a "window sill" line with flashes above the rear wheels and an abundance of chrome in the bodywork, then it turns out that an image that is not quite typical (for a serious SUV) is obtained.

Size and weight

After changing the generation, "Fortuner" has noticeably increased in external dimensions: 4795 mm in length, 1855 mm in width and 1835 mm in height. The wheelbase of the car fits into 2745 mm, and the ground clearance in the stowed state is fixed at 225 mm.

When equipped, the five-door weighs from 2060 to 2260 kg (depending on the modification), and its gross weight is from 2735 to 2750 kg. And also this SUV is capable of towing trailers (equipped with brakes) weighing up to 3000 kg.

Interior

The interior of the 2nd generation Toyota Fortuner is like that of passenger models of the brand: a multifunctional multi-steering wheel with three spokes, a beautiful "shield" with optitronic devices and an on-board computer display, as well as a modern center console with an 8-inch display of the multimedia complex and a dual-zone control unit "Climate". And, of course, it was not without an electronic clock located at the very top of the front panel.

The decoration of the SUV meets with good-quality plastics, "metal" inserts on the dashboard and high-quality leather, in which (in expensive trim levels) are dressed: seats, a steering wheel and a gear lever.

All versions of the 2nd generation Toyota Fortuner have a seven-seater cabin configuration: comfortable front seats, a three-seater rear sofa, divided in a 60/40 ratio, and a "gallery" on which only children can sit with maximum comfort.

With a full load of passengers, the trunk of an SUV is purely symbolic - only 297 liters.

The second and third rows of seats fold down, significantly increasing the cargo capacity of the car - up to 621 and 1934 liters, respectively (however, in this case, a completely flat area does not work). His full-size spare wheel is fixed “on the street” - under the bottom.

Specifications

In the Russian market for the "second" Toyota Fortuner two four-cylinder power units are announced:

  • The first is a 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine with an intercooler, 16-valve timing and Common Rail direct feed system, which produces 200 horsepower at 3000-3400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1600-2800 rpm.
  • The second (in our country it has been available since February 2018) is a 2.7-liter gasoline "aspirated" system with a distributed injection system, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and variable valve timing, generating 166 hp. at 5200 rpm and 245 Nm of peak thrust at 4000 rpm.

In tandem with both engines, a 6-speed "automatic" works, but the petrol version is also equipped with a 5-speed "mechanics".

The transmission is complemented by an all-wheel drive technology of the Part-time type with a rigidly connected front wheel drive (it can be connected at speeds up to 100 km / h, and there are no restrictions on the use of it), a rear differential lock and a reduction gear.

Dynamics, speed and consumption

The diesel SUV accelerates from standstill to 100 km / h after 10.8 seconds, accelerates to a maximum of 180 km / h, and in the combined mode “digests” 8.6 liters of fuel for every “hundred” kilometers (in the city it “promises” to consume 11 liters, and on the highway - 7.3 liters).

As for a car with a gasoline engine, it consumes from 11.1 to 11.3 liters of fuel (and even AI-92 does not shy away) per 100 km of run in mixed conditions.

Design features

Structurally, the 2nd generation Toyota Fortuner is a close relative of the "eighth Hilux", but does not completely copy it. The seven-seater SUV with a frame structure is equipped with independent suspension both at the front and at the rear: in the first case, double wishbones are used, and in the second, a five-link design on coil springs. Disc brakes with ABS and EBD are installed on each of the four wheels, and the front ones are also supplemented with ventilation.

Options and prices

In the Russian market, the second-generation restyled Toyota Fortuner in 2020 is sold in four equipment options to choose from - Standard, Comfort, Elegance and Prestige.

A car with a basic configuration with a 2.7-liter engine costs at least 2,436,000 rubles, and it can boast: three airbags, air conditioning, ABS, ESP, a third row of seats, four power windows, LED headlights, a light sensor, 17-inch steel wheels , an audio system with four speakers, heated and electric mirrors, and some other equipment.
