The first generation of the Audi A4 with the factory index B5, which replaced the fourth generation of the "80" model, was presented to the public in October 1994, and in November it entered serial production.

Three years later, the car underwent modernization, which made minor adjustments to the exterior and interior, and also replenished the power line with new units, after which it was produced unchanged until 2001 - until the successor appeared.

The "first" Audi A4 is a premium D-class model, which was offered in two body versions - a sedan and a five-door station wagon. The length of the three-box is 4478 mm, the width is 1733 mm, the height is 1415 mm, the wheelbase is 2617 mm of the total length. The passenger-and-freight version is 2 mm higher, and the rest is completely identical.
The ground clearance of the "German" is very modest - only 110 mm in running order.

Under the hood of the 1st generation A4, you can find a wide variety of power plants. For the car, gasoline "fours" and V-shaped "sixes" (both atmospheric and turbocharged) with a volume of 1.6-2.8 liters were offered, producing from 101 to 193 horsepower and from 140 to 280 Nm of torque. Among heavy fuel engines there are four- and six-cylinder turbodiesels with 1.9-2.5 liters capacity, the potential of which has from 75 to 150 "horses" and from 140 to 310 Nm of thrust. The engines combined 5- or 6-speed "mechanics", 4- or 5-band "automatic", front or permanent four-wheel drive.

The first generation of the Audi A4 is based on the PL45 platform with a fully independent chassis, with a four-link design at the front and twin wishbones with stabilizers at the rear. A hydraulic booster is responsible for facilitating control, and disc devices on all wheels (on the front - with ventilation) are responsible for braking.

The arsenal of the "first A4" has a number of positive qualities - powerful and high-torque engines, comfortable and energy-intensive suspension, acceptable equipment, sophisticated handling, high-quality and ergonomic interior, attractive appearance.
But the premium "German" also has negative sides - expensive original parts, low ground clearance and high fuel consumption in versions with V6.
