The second incarnation of the Mazda CX-5

At the opening of the automotive industry show in Los Angeles on November 16, 2016, Mazda presented its second-generation CX-5 compact crossover for the first time to the world community (the pre-premiere of which took place literally the night before, as part of a private event at the Hollywood Center Studio).

But this “change of generations” looks more like “just a deep modernization”: the off-road vehicle has slightly changed in technical terms (having received only improvements to the “trolley” and modern equipment) and, a little more noticeably, has changed visually (however, retaining the recognizability of the image ).

Externally, the second generation Mazda CX-5 still looks like a “little brother CX-9” - the five-door SUV body is drawn in a “new reading” of the design ideology “KODO is the soul of movement”. And I must say that the car looks brutal, but at the same time beautiful and graceful. A ferocious front end with a prickly gaze of headlights merging with a five-sided radiator grille, a tightly knit silhouette with expressive surfaces and energetic outlines, a lean rear with energetic lanterns and two exhaust ducts in the bumper - from any angle, the "Japanese" is pleasing to the eye.

The second "release" of the Mazda CX-5 is listed in the ranks of compact crossovers and stretches 4555 mm in length, of which 2700 mm affects the wheelbase, and reaches 1840 mm and 1670 mm in width and height, respectively. The bottom of the car is separated from the roadbed by a 215 mm gap.

The mood in the SUV's interior is set by a visually light minimalist dashboard, in the center of which there is a 7-inch monitor of the multimedia center, and on the driver's side there is a stylish instrument cluster with two dials and an information display of 4.6 inches, "recessed" into deep wells, and a beautiful multifunctional steering wheel ...

The center console is decorated with symmetrical ventilation deflectors and a prominent "remote control" of the microclimate, and the tunnel between the seats is at the mercy of the gearshift lever, the handbrake button and the infotainment system controller.

The interior of the "Japanese" is tailored with the use of high-quality materials, and it is assembled with dignity.

"Apartments" five-door are equipped with comfortable front seats with an optimal stiffness filling, dense profile and a lot of adjustments. The rear sofa is clearly shaped for two people, but promises them comfortable seating and a solid supply of free space.

The cargo compartment of the 2nd generation Mazda CX-5 has the correct shape and a decent volume - 403 liters to the waistline. The second row of seats is flush with the floor in several asymmetrical sections, which more than triples the capacity to 1,560 liters. The underground niche houses a full-size spare wheel on a steel rim, and the fifth door can be equipped with a remote-controlled electric drive for a surcharge.

Specifications. On the Russian market, the "second" Mazda CX-5 is offered with two atmospheric gasoline engines of the Skyactiv-G family:

  • Basic versions contain under the hood a 2.0-liter "four" with a single-row layout, 16 valves, direct injection and variable valve timing, which generates 150 "horses" at 6000 rpm and 210 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.
  • "Top" performances are driven by a four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with a direct "feed" system, 16-valve timing and variable valve timing technology, producing 192 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 256 Nm of available output at 4000 rpm.

The "junior" unit is combined with 6-speed "mechanics" or "automatic" to choose from, drive wheels of the front axle or all-wheel drive transmission i-Activ AWD with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that transfers up to 50% of traction to the rear wheels, depending on the "driving" conditions ...
But the "senior" version relies exclusively on an automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

Depending on the modification, the crossover breaks down from one place to the first "hundred" after 7.9-9.4 seconds, and its "maximum speed" rests on 187-197 km / h.

In the combined cycle of movement, the five-door requires from 6.2 to 7.3 liters of fuel for every 100 km of run.

The base for the Mazda CX-5 of the second incarnation is a platform from its predecessor, which has undergone modernization. High-strength types of steel are widely used in the "skeleton" of the off-road vehicle body, due to which its torsional rigidity exceeds 31,000 Nm / deg (this is immediately 15.5% better than the original generation model). In the front, the five-door uses an independent suspension with McPherson struts, and in the rear, a multi-link system.
The car is equipped with rack and pinion steering with electric booster and brake "pancakes" on all wheels (ventilated at the front) with ABS, BA, EBD and other assisting electronics. In addition, the equipment list of the "Japanese" includes the G-Vectoring Control technology, which imperceptibly for the "pilot", depending on the steering angle, speed and current acceleration, adjusts the engine thrust in small intervals, optimally loading the front wheels.

Options and prices. On the Russian market, the second "release" of the Mazda CX-5 in 2017 can be purchased in three levels of equipment - "Drive", "Active" and "Supreme".

The basic version, available only with a 2.0-liter engine, "mechanics" and all-wheel drive, is offered at a price of 1,431,000 rubles, and it is equipped with: six airbags, 17-inch steel wheels, a radio tape recorder with four columns, heated front seats, ABS, ESP, air conditioning, power windows for all doors and other "chips".

For a car in the most "stuffed" version you will have to pay at least 1,893,000 rubles. Its privileges are considered: two-zone "climate", 19-inch "rollers", light and rain sensors, a multimedia complex with a 7-inch screen, leather interior, LED headlights, electric front seats, rear view camera, keyless entry system and other equipment.
